Here's the scenario ... I store video files on HDs that are not physically installed in my system, instead, they are mounted via an external USB docking station. Assigned drive letter isn't always the same. Yes, I know there are ways to ensure that it is the same, or reassign the letter in drive manager after the fact, but the point remains that either through accident or inattention, sometimes the drive letter assigned at the time the VTX files were created is forgotten.
I should also point out that I do not generally save the thumbnails in the same directory as the video files. The latter are divided up into sub-dirs, while the thumbs are collected into a single dir. Again, sure, I could change the way these things are organized, but at the moment, it is what it is.
The result is that I've got a directory full of thumbnails, and if the mounted drive letter doesn't match that used at the time the VTX files were created, when I click on one, it doesn't open the associated video file.
Is there a way to change / update the drive letter association dynamically? In other words, is there a setting I could change to specify "the files are on drive X, Y, or Z" ??
I don't need to specify specific sub-dir(s) ... in fact, given the organizational structure, that would be problematic ... and, for me at least, that would not be necessary since the VTX file already pointed to the right directory, it's just that the directory is now located on a different drive ... and the same would be true for ALL the sib-dirs for that tranche of thumbnails.
I'm trying to avoid having to re-scan / and recreate the thumbs anew whenever this situation pops up. Yes, better organization on MY part would mean YOU don't need to code a "fix" for a issue that probably doesn't crop up too often, but it might be of use to someone besides myself.
Anyhow, just wondering if it's a possibility, and thank you in advance for your assistance!

Is there a way to update video location?
As enthusiastic I am about VTM and VTX, I need to complete the preceding remark of the user.
I store both: vtx and jpg files in the same directory in which their movie is sitting. Each movie and files related to it is saved in a separate folder. Unfortunately the user’s remark posted above applies also to my use of VTX and VTM, i.e. VTM is unable to open the movie file via vtx when the folder with the movie jpg and vtx is renamed or moved to another location in the same PC. That’s a very inconvinient disadvantage as it often happens that in the course of normal PC operation folders need to be renamed, restructured etc. etc. When such need occurs VTX software and files become unusable (except that vtx displays thumbnails correctly). That seems quite strange to me, as the soft, when the vtx file is clicked should be able to identify the folder in which the vtx file is saved and find a path to the movie in the same folder. I do not change movie file names. What I need to do is only occassionally moving the movie folder to another location on my PC or HD attached to it. No network connections etc. "complications" are involved in my practice.

Please provide an example. I don't fully understand the use case.M.Czerski wrote: ↑02 Jan 2025, 01:39 As enthusiastic I am about VTM and VTX, I need to complete the preceding remark of the user.

If the path to the video stored in VTX is broken, VTX will check for the same video file in the current VTX folder.
If you have VTX file next to your video file, you can move both files to any location, and VTX will still be able to open the video, as long as the video file is in the same folder as VTX.
Thanks for your time and reply!!!Please provide an example. I don't fully understand the use case.

Sorry, to have bothered you. When I did tests before sending my enquiry, the vtx files failed to start the movie properly. But when I made the same test today, it occurs, everything works fine when I move the movie folder to a new location. There must have been a temporary glitch of my PC when I made the first tests.
My enquiry is no longer valid. I suggest that your remove it from the forum.
Sorry, again.
Best regards and have a happy new year and all years to come.
I got a similar problem:
Like the original poster I stored all the screenlists in a subdir for each specific category and partially the video files themselves are again organized in specific subdirs.
Now, I moved all my video files and the corresponding screenlists to a new drive and and to a different path location. After that, the Thumbnail Viewer does not find the video files anymore.
The function "Locate video (F3)" in the Thumbnail Viewer works fine for me. But I would have to fix the location manually for each VTX file.
I would appreciate a runtime option to fix the video location for a single VTX file. Than I could generate a batch script, to handle all the VTX files in one job.
Is it a possible option as a feature request? Thanks for considering.
(In all I like VTM and Videonizer very much and use it frequently.)

Another idea for the feature to update the video location in the screenlist would be, to run the VTM again with list of video items and the same specific output folder (at "Quick Settings") again.
So, VTM could find the existing VTX file and would possibly touch the video location path in the screenlist.
I tried this workflow and mentioned, that the option "Skip video file if ALL required pictures EXIST on the disk (the content is NOT checked!)" does not seem to work right in the most recent version of VTM: I checked the option "Skip video ..." and did not check the option "Incremental filename" (and both VTX and JPG existed in the designated screenlist path). But VTM does not ignore the video, but generated a new JPG and VTX file with the ending "_(COPY_0001)" exactly as mentioned in the bespokern option "Incremental fielename". I checked this behaviour twice for two different file sets.
Perhaps you could fix it? Thanks in advance.
