This feature uses VTM Options and Settings directly from the thumbnail sheet (not from Videonizer Settings).
Your initial thumbnail sheet was created without the animation.

The original screenlist was definitively animated.
But I could narrow down the problem:
A) I have the issue of aborting animation process only when I press F2 during fullscreen display of the animated screenlist (*.mp4 in my case) and start to edit the animation from there.
B) But if I go via EDIT -> Screenlists -> RMB -> Edit Screenlist it works perfectly. Maybe in case A) VTM tries to recreate the file that is being displayed fullscreen and crashes..?
