Love the program but I've been having issues with most of my HEVC (x265) videos.
The issues are, either the files fails (Red X) or I get an output of 1x1 (for the separate images).
With 1x1 issue the last image is fine (the tiled composite of all the images).
For the issue with videos that straight fail I've tried the Crystal, Engine 1, and Engine 2 as my primary Engine; I don't have access to the Ultimate (yet).
I have K-Lite installed (Mega 12.9.1 version)
I do find some videos fails if I set the default engines to 1 & 2, when they already "worked" (still have the 1x1 issue for many) with the Crystal engine. I noticed that my LAV filters are trying to be used, so maybe it has to do with those?
I did get 1 video to work correctly with the Engine 1. It is a 1min 47s trailer 700w 428h

Any suggestions?

On the other hand, I have fixed some bugs in upcoming version of VTM. Maybe your issue is related to some of them.
So please wait for the new release.

I have checked that thread but didn't find anything helpful for my issue from it.
I'll just have to wait for the new version then
