Neither PTM or VTM have an option to add GIF files. While I can convert to another supported format it is more problematic and time-consuming to convert/extract animated GIFs. Videonizer recoginizes GIFs and displays them correctly but it doesn't treat animated GIFs as movies so the embedded VTM screenlist function doesn't work.

Are here any plans to add GIF functionality to PTM or VTM?

VTM is able to produce GIFs, but GIF is an image format, so currently you can not produce thumbnail sheets for GIFs in VTM.
You are the first one asking for such option. I will look into the opportuninty of adding GIF to VTM/PTM. I think PTM is a better choice.
